Travel Guides

Yo!

I thought that I might stick in a thread for us all to have a chat about traveling. Talk about places we've been/are going/want to go.

Like, if anyone has any questions on a coutry/state/city/whatever that another of us has been to or even lives in, then it would be handy to have someone who can answer a few of them.

For instance, if I were curious about going to certain parts of England, I'd rather have Leni's opinions and advice than that of a book. (Sorry, Leni; hope you don't mind my using you as an example...)

Admittedly, I'm doing this mostly for selfish reasons, because I figure that internet-friends from all over the world are probably the best resource I have as far as non-tour-guide travel information goes, and I'm going on a month trip at the end of this year.

But if anyone has anything they want to know, then I suppose this could be a cheap, personal way of finding out.

Don't mind at all - in fact I'm quite flattered! And if you do happen to land up in good old England-land, I'd be happy to give you any info I can. Hey, I could even show you around a few places if you like! Your very own personal tour guide - and all I charge is chocolate!!

I"ll stop by Belguim first and bring you some chocolates for that. But I'll be waiting at least a couple of years before I can really travel at all.

Gap year before uni, I'm thinking.

But I'm going to Vietnam and Cambodia at the end of this year with a few other kids from school through the World Challenge organisation. Should be good. I'm pumped, and I've got to wait til November.

*Sigh*

What a co-inkidink  - my younger son Jay's going to Kenya and Uganda with World Challenge in July 2010! He has to raise £4,000, so we're coming up with all sorts of crazy ideas for fundraising. Just need time to put the ideas into practice now...!!

Really? Yeah, I didn't realise how popular it was until like, the other day, when some distant (aunt and uncle of some sort) relations came over and said that their grandson had done it a few years back.

Co-inkidink, indeed.

Uganda and Kenya? Wow, that'd be quite a culture shock, I imagine. And the money raising'll be... interesting. Phew. Good luck with it all, Leni! I'll irritate you with how wonderful it is when I get back in December and you can fire your son up a little (more). Hehe.

Well, this isn't as exciting as places like Kenya, but I am going to DC in 3 weeks.

The trip is sponsored through my school and I'm gone for 5-ish days. Two way ticket, food, museums, hotels, etc. is all covered in a 2,000 dollar price. I had to give up a Christmas present for my grandma to help pay, but it's worth it in my opinon.

There are about 88 students going, but I think Mrs. Anderson just told us they dropped a student because of behavior issues, so 87. Which reminds me, I have to conrtoll my self so I don't get kicked off. :] We have weekly meetings in our chaperone's rooms where we are given assignments that add up to prizes.

It's going to be freezing...yay me. :(

So, on April 3rd we go to school for a full day, go home for a few minutes (or hours depending on our group's flight time), then get on a plane, fly all night, get to DC, then go sight seeing. We don't see a bed until Saturday night. Then we do a whole bunch of things then come back on the 8th.
Why do writers write? Because it isn't there.

DC's fun. I went about 8-9 years ago (man, that's forever for me!), and had a really good time.

I also went to NYC in April of 2002, which was one of the most amazing experiences I've had. It was interesting to see the city like that, after 9/11. We got to go to Ground Zero and did a memorial thing, which was cool. It was a band trip, so we also got to play at the UN building, which was awesome as well.

Castiel: This isn't funny, Dean. The voice says I'm almost out of minutes.

I remember the days when I used to travel! Back when I'd go to NY every break for a show and drive to all sorts of places for long weekends. I used to go to DC all the time to see the Museums and memorials. But, DC's pretty awesome. You'll have a lot of fun!

BUT I'm planning to go to Chicago in a few weeks. I couldn't be more excited.

Anyone have any sugestions for things I ougt to waste my money on while I'm there?

Ah, band trips are fun! Tiring as heck, but fun. I'm one of the lucky ones who only ever had to carry a flute. I always felt sorry for those who had to carry a tuba, or something.

Wow, all this travelling going on! I'd SOOOOOOOO love to come to America - maybe one day when I'm rich (hahahaha!).

But then I'm doing a lot of travelling at the moment - which is why I'm not around much just now. Just got back from a working trip to Shetland. It's an absolutely fabulous, beautiful place - so I guess I can't complain!

We're planning a mega-trip to somewhere in 2011 - that year Jon turns 50, Mike 21 and Jay 18, so we decided to cash in our life insurance and do something outrageous. Not sure what yet, but every time we mention it, the kids yell "NEW ZEALAND"!!!

Hope y'all have a good time, wherever you go.

New Zealand's good. Granted I haven't been there since I was five (and man, has it really been that long?).

Actually, we stayed there for a week en route to the US. Interesting.

But NZ accents? Oh, my God. They drive me nuts.

I've only been outside the US twice (to Toronto, which wasn't that far away at the time because I lived in Mid-Michigan), and I've only been west of the Mississippi River once (to LA for a job interview), but I've been around the Eastern portion of the US, so I can answers questions about a fair number of places.

I've lived in Detroit/state of Michigan, the Baltimore/DC/Virginia area, and now Miami/South Florida (so all you CSI:Miami writers now have a set of eyeballs on location, lol). I've been to New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Central Florida (which is sooo different from Miami), Ohio & Pennsylvania...not that there will ever be a lot of questions about Toledo or Altoona, but if there are, you know where to go :D

I've traveled quite a lot.
Beginning of July I'm going to Dallas for the INternational Key Club Convention! I'm so very excited!

If anyone ever wants to bring a couple to an island, or the Caribbean, bring 'em on over to Aruba, and I shall be their (your) tourguide!

Even though I'm not fond of this tiny island I live on, it is a really nice touristic place and people love it!

I've lived in Europe, too, namely Holland, France, Spain, Italy and Belgium, so if you ever need help, don't hesitate!

Wow. That's a fair bit of geography covered. I intend on taking a few years off before uni (mostly because I can't organise my thoughts about uni, but travelling is easier) and just... going. Take trains from Beijing to London, then road-trip across the US, or something.

Of course, I probably need to find someone to go with me. Hehe.

How many languages can you speak, as an aside? More than one?

I'll go with you Giorgia! Gladly.

I wish I could travel like that.
