Hope your homework's going okay. (:

There's no reason to blush -- from what I hear, Queer as Folk was a great show. It's just that I haven't seen a minute of it. I'm not sure how that happened, though, as one of my friends watched it almost religiously.

I like voting. But I think you're right -- compulsory voting might not be the best solution. I guess that at least some of those people in Australia don't even know who they are voting for.

It was a good show. Hehe. The characters were just so awesome. I watched the US version, if that makes a diffrence. I haven't seen much of the UK one, but I do like the US one better, which is odd, because usually the original's better. I don' think they ever showed the UK one in TV, here, anyway.

Yeah, it's one of those shows that no one else I know really ever watched, except my mum, haha. Probably because most teenagers wouldn't really care, and it was always on at like 1AM on Thursdays, or some such.

I think that compulsory voting works in its own way, because it can't be demographically (so not a word) targeted. You know? It means that it is literally a majority vote. It's about how people vote, instead of who actually votes.

Frankly I think that any system that actually gets anyone in the UK to give a damn about politics would be good. I think in the last local elections, the turnout barely made a double-figure percentage. I think that learning how government works should be a bigger part of the school curriculum, and that all kids when they reach their 18th birthday should be forced thereafter to read each and every party manifesto at gunpoint, then frog-marched to the polling booth to do the deed!

[Erm... does that come under the heading of "democratic"? :? Ah well...)

Anyway, just so's we can at least pretend we're still playing this particular "silly forum game" - I've already covered your sig, Giorgia, so... Lily, I like yours, but I have to ask - who's Thomas Dewar?
(Obviously too busy writing my despotic manifesto to learn anything useful!!)

I couldn't agree more. I'm not really into politics, but I think people should be more aware of the fact that their vote does make a difference. They should be made to want to vote (it seems that I have my own despotic manifesto, too ). Moreover, I think people should vote for the party with whose manifesto they agree. That's why I have a slight problem with compulsory voting -- I don't think that some of those people who simply have to vote know who/what they are voting for. Of course, I may be wrong.

About Thomas Dewar... To be honest, when I first saw the quote, I didn't know who he was either. :D I still don't know much about him. What I know is that he was a whiskey distiller. He believed that you can be both very successful and very happy. One of his other thoughts is: "Making a mistake is also an achievement." It reminds me of your signature. :D

I think that learning about government systems is important, but it tends to be one of those things that no one can make interesting. I know how important educated voting can be, but I'd probably pay no attenion whatsoever if someone tried to teach me about our government system.

I think that awareness of policies and candidates, and the like is much, much more worthwhile, you know? Get the kids angry enough to argue about policies, and you've got a good thing going. I always loved doing that. I think it'd be much more successful, and essentially, people'll be more likely to vote consciously, instead of just checking boxes at random.

I mean, the past few years have been hectic enough in my state alone to make me wish I were old enough to vote. Some of the policies drive me nuts. Don't even get me started on national politics. Haha.

And yes, love your sig, Lily. I thought I was the only one who had no idea who that was. Haha. But now I'm picturing all sorts of funny things about minds and parachutes and terminal velocity... Hehe. My brain is weird...

Hehe, I love my signature so much precisely because it makes me giggle. You have a great tagline as yours, Audrey.

Georgia, now you made me picturing all sorts of funny things about minds and parachutes and terminal velocity. :D
